About Daydreams Retreat

Daydreams Retreat Short History

Nestled at the foot of the Historic Sunshine Road Settlement’ Daydreams Cottage’ is situated in an area with a rich past. Originally Sunshine Road was the site of a Maori settlement. In the 1920s the Railways purchased the land to house their staff. In the 1980s the Railways were corporatized and the Cottages began to be purchased by private owners. Today the Settlement is renowned for its historic charm and outstanding views. Across the open fields to Cherry Grove and the juncture of the Ongarue River which was the site of a great historic battle. Maru the Conquerer traveled up the Wanganui River and conquered the local tribes in the area hence the name Taumarunui. Which also means a place of shelter. After the Waikato Maori land wars of the 1860s the Waikato tribes retreated into the heart of the Country. Here Matutaera Tāwhiao succeeded his father Pōtatau Te Wherowhero 1st Maori King and pressed Queen Victoria for a separate Maori state, He was ignored, eventually dying in 1894 aged 71. and is buried in Taumarunui Primary School grounds

Much Loved, these examples of Sunshine Settlement Cottages have a contented Hobbiton feel and speak of simple people-orientated values that somehow the world seems to have forgotten
